The B-36 first flew on 8 August 1946 and one year later joined the newly organized Strategic Air Command. It became SAC’s deterrent force for a decade until it was retired in 1959. The B-36was the first truly intercontinental bomber, which was capable of carrying a 10,000 lb. bomb load for 5,000 miles and returning to base without refueling. It was powered by six Pratt & Whitney 3,500 hp engines driving pusher propellers, and later four turbine engines were added. It was often said that the B-36 was flying “with six turning and four burning”.
