This huge biplane bomber entered British Royal Air Force Service in April 1918 as a pioneer strategic bomber able to reach industrial targets in Germany’s Ruhr Valley. It served well during the remainder of World War I and provided a hint of operational possibilities in WWII. 107 were built under license in the U.S. and air power pioneer General Billy Mitchell used one to sink the captured German battleship Ostfriesland in 1921 to call attention to the vulnerability of shipping to attack from the air.
