“The “Miracle at Kham Duc”, the daring rescue of three stranded combat controllers by Lieutenant Colonel Joe M. Jackson during the Battle of Kham Duc in May 1968. Despite the airstrip being under heavy fire and damaged, Jackson volunteered to fly his C-123 with the 311th Special Operations Squadron into Kham Duc, landed as a rocket slid down the runway without exploding, under intense NVA fire to extract the mistakenly reinserted controllers, the last Americans on the ground. Lt. Col. Joe Jackson was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for his valiant effort for saving the lives of the forward air controller who were under intense fire from the North Vietnamese forces.
