Lockheed Martin F-35C Joint Strike Fighter
The 2001 winner of the Joint Strike Fighter competition was Lockheed Martin, whose entry is to become the multinational, multiservice, multirole F-35 which will replace four varieties of current combat aircraft. The aircraft is being developed in conventional (CTOL), short takeoff and vertical landing (STOVL), and naval carrier versions (CV). The stealthy 9-g capable single place all weather strike aircraft carries a wide variety of air-to-surface weapons, AIM-120 air-to-air missiles and an internal 27 mm gun, all carried internally.
The painting shows the U. S. Navy’s future F-35C catching the number three wire on the Harry S. Truman (CVN-75) as others enter the pattern to join the older aircraft they will replace, seen on the forward deck.*
