The General Dynamics F-111 Aardvark played a significant role in training flights at Nellis Air Force Base (AFB), Nevada, particularly during the late 1960s and 1970s, as Nellis was a key hub for advanced combat training and home to the U.S. Air Force Warfare Center.

The F-111’s automatic terrain-following radar allowed low-altitude flight (e.g., in canyons, valleys or over mountains) in all weather conditions, a critical skill practiced at Nellis due to the NTTR’s diverse terrain. This painting depicts the amazing bird eye view the pilots had as they flew over the Canyons of the Southwest.

1968, six F-111As from Nellis were deployed to Vietnam under Combat Lancer (March 15–November 1968), testing the aircraft in combat. Nellis provided replacement aircraft for two lost F-111s, highlighting its role in training and sustaining operational readiness.
