XFD-1 Phantom I
In July 1946 the Phantom I landed aboard and took off from the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt, becoming the first turbine-powered American aircraft to operate successfully from a carrier.
This XFD-1 Phantom I was piloted by Lt. Cdr. James Davidson in 1946 and passed the test of carrier suitability by landing aboard and taking off from the USS Franklin D. Roosevelt. Less than two years later the Phantom I became the first pure jet fighter to enter naval service when all pilots of VF-17A qualified in FD-1s aboard the USS Saipan. Shortly thereafter it was the first operational jet fighter to join the Marines.*
