Instructor Pilot Lt.C.I. Ferris, the artist dad, depicted here in his Boeing P-12B #2 of the 43rd  School Squadron with two student pilots as they practice landing in a farmer’s field during “strange field” landing practice around Kelly Field TX in 1932.

The Boeing P-12Bs of Kelly Field’s 43rd School Squadron were often seen in the Texas farm fields during the 1932 “strange field landing practice”. A required part of the Air Corps Advance Flying School training syllabus of those days, the students had selected the field as they “cut” their engines on a hand signal from their instructor who has landed behind them and awaits their take-off. This view looking down the barrel of a shotgun proves to be  a dangerous position as farmers often defended their property with shotguns, a real “Farmer’s Nightmare”.
