First flown on 22 December 1964 it was designed at Lockheed’s Advanced Development Projects, the “Skunk Works”.
Few aircraft have the good fortune to make world headlines after eight years of service, but the Lockheed’s SR-71A did it on 1 September, 1974 by flying from New York to London in 1 hour, 55 minutes, 42 seconds. Piloted by Major James Sullivan with reconnaissance systems officer Major Noel Widdifield, the record-breaking flight covered the 3,490 miles at an average of 1,817 mph.
